The Maldives has once again cemented its status as a global tourism leader by securing an impressive 30 awards at the South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) 2024. The prestigious event, held on Friday, 20th September 2024, at the Aloft Kathmandu, Nepal, was supported by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the Hotels Association of Nepal (HAN).
Among the accolades, the Maldives took home 15 SATA Gold Awards, celebrating excellence across various segments of its hospitality and tourism sector. Notably, the country received the coveted Visitors’ Choice Award for Leading Beach Destination, further affirming its reputation as a top destination for beach holidays. The Maldives previously claimed this award in 2023, 2017, and 2016. Additionally, the country garnered 14 SATA Silver Awards, demonstrating its continued excellence in numerous categories.
The event also featured a panel discussion titled “Regional Tourism in South Asia – Challenges & Connectivity.” Key industry leaders participated, including Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director (CEO & MD) of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives). Other panelists included Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, President of Voyages Kerala; Mr. Taufiq Rahman, Secretary General of the PATA Bangladesh Chapter; and Ms. Nandini Lahe-Thapa, Senior Director of PR and Publicity/Crisis Cell of the Nepal Tourism Board. The panel was moderated by Ishan Koul of Naaz Hotel Consultants.
Speaking at the panel, CEO & MD Shiuree emphasised the significance of regional tourism cooperation and the Maldives’ appeal as a short-haul destination for South Asian travellers. He remarked, “The Maldives offers a unique combination of pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and diverse marine life. These natural wonders make us a highly desirable destination for tourists, especially for short-haul tourists from SA countries. I believe our worthwhile and value-added experiences contribute greatly to the growth and empowerment of the regional tourism sector.”
Since 2016, SATA has been celebrating excellence in South Asia’s hospitality and travel industry, recognizing outstanding organizations and individuals across a wide range of categories. The Maldives’ remarkable success at SATA 2024 highlights its commitment to upholding the highest standards in hospitality and tourism, solidifying the country’s position as a premier destination in South Asia.
